King's Entrance Festspielhaus Bayreuth
This entrance was added after the house was constructed in an attempt
to entice the reclusive patron King Ludwig II of Bavaria to attend the
festival. It houses a private stairway which today os usable by
all. A tradition at Bayreuth is that a small ensemble plays fanfares
on this balcony to announce the start of each act. A single fanfare
sounds 15 minutes before the start, a double fanfare 10 minutes before
the start, and a triple fanfare 5 minutes before the start. The
fanfares consist of a motive from that day;s music drama.
